The first impressions

My dear friends,

I’m thinking of you all the time. The days are passing very quickly, I’ve just been here for ten days. My feelings are mixed, it is strange: on one hand I’m feeling very calm, sometimes it seems as if l had been here before, but on the other hand everything is different. Well, really the poverty is the same as in other places. What has struck me most is the rubbish, there is rubbish everywhere. I don’t know how the people can live in this way. Yesterday Carmen and I went to the Pagoda, because I’ll receive Khmer classes from a Buddhist monk. I thought the Pagoda would be clean, but no, this place is the same as the rest of Poipet. The monks are very kind to us. It’s funny, they wear only a cloth but they have a mobile phone, a laptop. We were chatting with them for a long time, they told us about their work, their life, they also asked a lot of questions about our life. Before we finished the meeting the monk who is going to teach me Khmer asked Carmen and me if we could visit a very poor family with him. It was very shocking, there were two women with three o four children. One of the women was the grandmother, and the other was the aunt. The two women drink a lot and one of them is very sick; the doctor says that it’s impossible to do anything for her. She is 34. The children’s mother is in Thailand and the father died last month. The poor children don’t eat every day. Here this situation is very common.

I also miss everybody from Spain, from Bristol, I suppose that this is normal, I’m not working at the moment and I have a lot of free time. I’m helping the sisters to cook.  Today I couldn’t go to Mass, because my stomach is not very good, I think it is the change of water. And the mosquitoes are eating very well with me. The atmosphere of the community is very good.

Today is Sunday and yesterday we had a lovely party, because the man who donated the money for the boarding school and the kinder garden came with some friends. The children danced to welcome. They were very happy to see the children and the work that the sisters and the volunteers are doing.
Ah, I forgot the girls have changed my name, they call me Bonsarai Juuuuli.

  3. Querida Juuuulii. Me alegro de tener noticias "felices" de tu estancia. Qué suerte tener internet para estar cerca. Además, me encanta tu inglés: puedo entenderlo (jeje).

    Besos, Juan
